CUBA & GUATEMALA:

A CONVERGENCE OF LATIN CULTURES

Cuba & Guatemala: A Convergence of Latin Cultures, is a set of accordion artist books that pay tribute to Latinx heritage. The books illustrate the geography, history, and culture of the cities Havana, Cuba, and Antigua, Guatemala, creating a unique experience for the reader to learn about these two countries.

For these books, I wanted to incorporate both information on the histories of these countries along with images I recognize most growing up. For Havana, Cuba, I went with a more archival approach, discussing more of Havana’s extensive history and architecture. Meanwhile, for Guatemala, I focused more on the country’s natural and geographical connections and how they impact the city of Antigua.

I decided to create according books to allow readers to read the book page by page or view it as one whole landscape. For the cover materials I wanted to relate as much to the cultures as I could and use fabrics that reminded me most of the countries, so for Guatemala I used a traditional patterned fabric while for Cuba I used a simpler tan linen.
